Curtin University Midland Campus

Curtin University Midland Campus, Western Australia — Architectural & Educational Photography by Pixel Collective

Location: Curtin University Midland Campus, Perth (Midland WA)
Photography by: Pixel Collective

At Pixel Collective, we specialise in capturing the essence of architectural and commercial interiors photography, and our shoot at Curtin University’s Midland Campus in Western Australia perfectly embodies this discipline. This landmark project showcases innovative educational architecture, thoughtful materiality, and purposeful spatial design — all elements that make the Midland Campus a standout subject for architectural photography.

A New Hub for Health Sciences & Collaborative Learning

Curtin University’s Midland Campus is a three-storey, 3,000 m² facility designed to support multidisciplinary health science education, including medicine, nursing, allied health, and immersive simulation-based teaching environments. The campus serves as a catalyst for community engagement and education in the revitalised historic Midland precinct, positioning Curtin University as a leader in innovative and experiential learning.

Situated on traditional Whadjuk Noongar country, the campus building reflects a sensitive approach to site, heritage, and culture — merging contemporary educational needs with a deep respect for place. It forms a central part of the regional master plan for Midland, integrating public spaces and fostering connections with surrounding health services and community infrastructure.

Architectural Design & Collaborative Vision

The architectural vision for Curtin University Midland Campus was developed by an expert design team led by Lyons Architecture in close collaboration with Silver Thomas Hanley Architects. This partnership produced an educational building with a strong civic presence, framed by robust materiality and thoughtfully integrated cultural expression.

  • Lyons Architecture, principal design architect, focused on creating flexible, accessible learning environments that encourage interaction, collaboration and wellbeing.

  • Silver Thomas Hanley Architects brought additional architectural insight, helping shape a building that balances contemporary form with contextual heritage references.

  • The design incorporates features that respond to both the industrial heritage of Midland and the distinctive architectural language associated with Curtin University’s broader campus identity.

These design decisions have been recognised by the Australian architectural community, with the project earning prestigious awards including The Hillson Beasley Award for Educational Architecture and The Julius Elischer Award for Interior Architecture at the WA Architecture Awards.

Photography Highlights: Materiality, Space & Experience

Our architectural photography at the Midland Campus highlights the rich material palette, spatial arrangement, and cultural storytelling embedded in the building’s design. Key photographic themes include:

  • Natural light and material texture, emphasising the dynamic interplay between solid brickwork and glazed learning spaces.

  • Spatial flow and connectivity, capturing how students and educators move through collaborative zones, labs, and informal study areas.

  • Contextual integration, showcasing how the architecture relates to the surrounding historic precinct and engages with community spaces.

  • Cultural integration, reflecting Indigenous design influences and public artwork that celebrate Noongar heritage.

These images bring to life the careful design strategies deployed by the architects, showing how architectural forms and interiors work together to support both academic excellence and community connection.

A Meaningful Educational Environment

Curtin University’s Midland Campus is more than an academic building — it’s a dynamic learning environment, a community hub, and a visually compelling example of contemporary educational architecture in Western Australia. By blending thoughtful design, cultural recognition, and high-quality materials, the project supports Curtin’s mission to expand access to health sciences education while enhancing the urban fabric of Midland.
