Project: Novotel Surfers Paradise
We were commissioned by Dezign Group to photograph their marquee fit out of the new Penthouses at Novatel Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast, QLD.
The Penthouse Suites at Novotel Surfers Paradise are a blast from the past; built in 1985, they have a generosity of space not seen in current hotels. Occupying three floors, including a rooftop terrace and plunge pool with an imposing P&O stair connecting the spaces, they are unique.
Dezign were engaged by Challenger to undertake a full refurbishment of both suites, under our integrated design delivery methodology encompassing full design, fitout and FFE procurement. Having recently completed the Novotel Sydney City Centre, we were familiar with Novotel ‘Hypothesis’ brand which has an ethos of minimizing waste – not only environmentally but also in terms of reducing waste of space and time.
The colour palette reflects the nature-based tones of Surfers Paradise; soft white walls accented with blues, green, ochre finishes, and sun-bleached timber. Feature custom wallpapers capture the soft colours of dawn over the ocean through to dusk over the hinterland. This coupled with highly detailed bespoke joinery and FFE the suites present a calm and contemporary design aesthetic.
Finishes were chosen with longevity and minimizing waste in mind – the use of sold timber coupled with bespoke steel bases facilitates a 2D life for elements which typically end up in landfill. Leatherette upholstery cladding to the bedheads, wardrobes and minibars provide a tactile yet durable finish to these key FFE items. The custom carpets are locally produced, reducing transport emissions. Furthermore, at the end of its life the carpet can be recycled by the manufacturer into the backing for carpet tiles, eliminating waste.
